Close Gitmo? Are You Nuts?

Television news programs have been saturated with calls for the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. Problem with that is, where do you put the inmates? There was a lib on television during the 4:00 pm hour on FoxNews who ended his comments with a statement that we could relocated them to US Prison facilities. What?!? The purpose for their being located outside of the United States is so that the Constitution would not apply to them. As soon as one of these individuals set foot on our soil, they are afforded Constitutional protection. But I have a solution. No bars required. Relocate all interrogated prisoners to Wake Island. There is nothing there but an air strip that is only used in the event of an emergency over the pacific. Put them all there and airlift food to them about every 2 weeks. Let them fend for themselves from there. First off, there is no communications from the island. No vehicles can leave the island. And better still, no other people. There are left over barracks from when the military actively used it as a defense base that could be utilized by the new inhabitants. A renewal of the penal colony. We have been the governing nation over countless un-inhibited islands in the South Pacific since WWII. One of these is a small strip of coral reef which is only visible above water for several hours a day. Wake Island is a stable island which used to be a military installation. Full time permanent inhabitants could survive there as long as they were provisioned regularly. And get this, no guards required. Maybe just a small security force to keep interlopers from the island.
Let sharks and hundreds of miles of ocean guard these extremists. One thing is for sure, no one could leave. And if they can't leave or communicate with the outside world, they are no longer a threat. But I fear that Amnesty International and the ACLU would have problems with that also. Are penal colonies cruel and unusual punishment? Australia seemed to have worked out ok and it started as a British Penal Colony. I say we do it. Fence in a small air detatchment charged with securing a safety zone around the island. Provide all the comforts of home for them and cycle them in and out. Give them no security authority over the inhabitants just over the security area around the island. Maybe include a pier for a Cutter type of ship and a crew to man it. Other than that, let the detainees govern themselves.
This way there would be no question of Koran desecration or inhumane treatment. Just point them toward Mecca and let them do the rest. Congressional Emergency Urge passage of HR 2679, The Public Expression of Religion Act of 2005. What this bill does, is to remove the ability for the awarding of federal funds in order to recover legal fees in Establishment Clause challenge cases. These suits are often taken pro bono. But once won, the attorneys are able to recover legal fees from the government. We need to get groups like the ACLU off the Taxpayers' Dime. Call, write, or email your Congressman and Senators and urge passage of this bill.
